I remember struggling with watercolor as an art student. What seemed like the most effortless media ended up being a painful enterprise for me.
I’d love for us to reconcile and these sketches from Japan give me hope that it might be possible. I love how drawings are a part of the everyday life in Japan. These ones for instance were casually hanged on a wall above a vegetables stand, in a half-lit alley of a popular market. It didn’t fool me though, I know refinement when I see it, even when it’s pretending to be oh-so-unsophisticated.
